Cardamom flowers bloom in early summer, and autumn is the time for harvesting. Since the beginning of August this year, the people of the mountainous regions of Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces have been actively entering the forests to harvest the new cardamom crop. Currently, Lao Cai province boasts nearly 3,000 hectares of cardamom, the largest area in the entire Northwest region of Vietnam.
The distinctive feature of the big cardamom plant is that it only thrives and bears fruit when grown under the canopy of large trees in the primary forests of certain highland districts in the provinces of Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, and Son La.
Cardamom is not only a valuable medicinal herb but also an indispensable spice used in the signature dishes of Asian cuisine, particularly in the culinary traditions of India, Pakistan, the UAE, China, Vietnam, and more.
