Top precious medicinal herbs in Vietnam (Part 3)

Vietnam is famous for hundreds of thousands of precious medicinal herbs that are not only widely used domestically but also sought after and imported by many countries around the world. Some medicinal herbs can only be found in the natural environment, while others can be cultivated on a large scale. Below are some typical medicinal products that Mai Anh Group provides.

Betel nut

A mature betel tree can be up to 15m tall. It often grows wild or is planted in the delta or mountainous areas of Vietnam such as Nam Dinh, Hoa Binh, Lang Son, and Ninh Binh. In China, betel trees are often found in Guangxi or Guangdong provinces. Parts used include seeds and bark.

According to traditional medicine, the bark of the betel tree is effective in treating toothache or tooth decay, and the nut can be used as cooking oil due to the essential oil content in the nut of up to 70%. In addition, betel nut is also used to treat impetigo or pimples. However, be careful when using this kind of nut because of its toxicity.

Cinnamon

Not only known as a precious medicinal herb, cinnamon is also used as a familiar spice. This tree grows up to 20m tall. Currently, cinnamon is widely grown in the provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Quang Ninh, Yen Bai, and Thanh Hoa – Vietnam. Some other countries that grow cinnamon include Laos, India, China, and Myanmar.

Some outstanding uses of cinnamon include:

  • Support breathing and stimulates digestion.
  • Increase uterine contractions and increase intestinal motility.
  • Prevent coronary atherosclerosis.
  • Cure diarrhea and colds.

Star anise

Similar to cinnamon, star anise often appears in some dishes such as Pho or Vietnamese beef stew. Originating from China, this tree is only 10m tall. The part used is flowers – usually have 6-8 petals, forming a star shape. Star anise is often dried before export or can be processed into oil essential.

This kind of medicinal product has the following effects:

  • Treat colds, stomachaches, and headaches.
  • Treat bone and joint diseases.
  • Reduce bruising.
  • Expectorant and cough treatment.

Aromatic ginger

As a plant that does not ask for much care, aromatic ginger grows wild or is planted in tropical monsoon climates. The harvest season is spring after the flowers have withered. Its tuber is often used as medicine; however, this type of tuber can only be dried in the sun and cannot be dried with charcoal.

The aromatic ginger tuber has many health benefits including reducing inflammation, pain, and spasms and treating asthma, digestive disorders, or colds. Note that aromatic ginger can cause side effects; therefore, this medicinal herb should not be used for a long time.

Alpinia galanga

Alpinia galanga has a scientific name Alpinia galanga Willd. The season lasts from September to October. Alpinia galanga is not popular in Vietnam. It is often found in the Traditional medicine.

Alpinia galanga has some effects such as:

  • Treatment of stomach pain.
  • Stimulate food digestion.
  • Sober up.
  • Anti-inflammatory.

Laccifer lacca kerr

Laccifer lacca kerr is a red resin secreted by kerria lacca – a species of insect. Female insect produces resin on stems thicker than males. To harvest the medicine laccifer lacca kerr, it is necessary to choose a host plant (that provides food for this special insect) such as Cajanus indicus, Desmodium cephairotes, or fruit trees such as apples, longans, and lychees. The harvest is from April to May and from September to October.

Laccifer lacca kerr has the following effects:

  • Treat pimples and scabies.
  • Treatment of postpartum bleeding and amenorrhea.
  • Treatment of tooth decay.
