Stemona tuberosa is a vine with a small, smooth and winding stem, up to 10m long. The leaves are opposite, elongated, prominent on the surface with 10-12 secondary veins running from the stem to the tip.
The inflorescence grows in the leaf axils with 2-4cm long stems, each cluster consists of 1-2 large yellow or red flowers. The perianth consists of four parts, the stamens are short, the ovary is conical. The plant flowers in the summer and the fruit contains four seeds.
The tuberous root of Stemona tuberosa is the part with the highest medicinal value. The roots are in clusters, each plant can produce up to 30 tubers, so Stemona tuberosa is also called “thirty vine”. The older the tubers are, the larger they are and the stronger their medicinal properties are.
Dried Stemona tuberosa are diamond-shaped, 6-12cm long, 0.5-1.5cm in diameter, the head is slightly swollen, the tail is tapered. The outer shell is wrinkled, has deep longitudinal grooves, is white-yellow or yellow-gray in color. The substance is hard, brittle, has a sweet and bitter taste, and a characteristic aroma. The type with a red or dark brown outer shell is often considered better.
The roots are usually harvested in early winter or early spring, when the plant has not yet developed new shoots. Before harvesting, it is necessary to cut off the vine, remove the young plants, then wash, dry or dry them for preservation.
According to traditional medicine, Stemona tuberosa has a sweet and bitter taste, is slightly warm in nature, and enters the Lung meridian. This medicinal herb has the effect of moistening the lungs, reducing cough, disinfecting and killing parasites. Stemona tuberosa is commonly used in remedies for coughs caused by tuberculosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, whooping cough, roundworm infection, and pinworm infection.
Currently, Stemona tuberosa has been widely grown in many localities in Vietnam, but the output is still not enough to meet domestic and export demand.
