Another type of Vietnamese durian is about to be exported to China

Frozen durian fruit with shell, durian puree, and durian rice without shell are being promoted in the process of opening the Chinese market.

The Plant Protection Department – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just asked localities to review and summarize growing areas and packaging facilities for fresh coconuts and frozen durians exported to China and send the total results to the Department before April 1.

This is to speed up the process of opening the market for fresh coconuts and frozen durians exported from Vietnam to China, as well as prepare all conditions for registration of growing area codes and packaging facilities after the signing of the Protocol.

The Plant Protection Department requests localities to notify and guide organizations and individuals wishing to register growing areas and packaging facilities for fresh coconuts and frozen durians exported to the Chinese market.

At the same time, it is necessary to review, check, and evaluate the field and compile a list of growing areas and packaging facilities for fresh coconuts (green-shelled fruits and peeled coconuts) and frozen durians (durian fruits with shell, durian puree, and durian rice without shell) which have enough documents, equipment, and machinery to meet the plant quarantine and food safety requirements of the importing countries.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the first two months of the year, durian exports reached 172 million USD, up nearly 200% over the same period last year.

China is the leading market with 92% market share, while Thailand is second with more than 6% market share.

China is currently the world’s largest durian consumer market, but it can only be grown on a pilot basis in Hainan Island with very little output.

The supply of durian to China is mainly from Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Thailand is allowed to export both fresh and frozen durian while Vietnam currently only exports fresh durian and Malaysia only exports frozen ones.

Recently, Malaysian media reported that the country is trying to bring fresh durian products to the Chinese market and hopes to achieve this by the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in May 2024.

At the first anniversary of the Durian Producers Association, a memorandum of understanding has recently been signed to establish a dedicated durian route from Kuala Lumpur to Zhengzhou, representing an important step forward in preparing to export fresh durian.

This shows that the competition for durian products in China in the future will be quite fierce.
